Trailblazing Lord Mayor goes Electric

In Short Cuts by Jonathan Humphrey

The Lord Mayor of Newcastle-upon-Tyne is blazing a trail for elected officials everywhere with a new 100% electric Nissan LEAF mayoral limousine.

The first mayor in the UK to make a permanent switch to an electric official car, other councils please take note.

The LEAF will be used to transport the Lord Mayor to official engagements by the official chauffeur. The car is fitted with a plaque bearing the Lord Mayor’s coat of arms, a city council flag and the city’s oldest number plate, OBB1.

Further boosting of Newcastle’s credentials as an ‘EV friendly’ city will be the installation of new electric car charging points at the Civic Centre and Mansion House, the Lord Mayor’s official residence.

Sales of the Nissan Leaf are gaining pace worldwide along with plug in hybrids and range extended models.

More thank 120,000 Nissan LEAF have been sold worldwide and with 4,000 sales in the UK, the LEAF is the electric car of choice. The car can cover 124 miles on a single charge and can be charged from zero to 80 per cent in as little as 30 minutes.

With prices coming down, and more chargers than petrol stations now in London, it is time to rethink electric cars.
