Short Cuts – Might the prancing horse be getting a little nervy? Is the deep, deep complacency in which Maranello has slept for decades being disturbed at last?

The unveiling at the Paris Motor Show of the 458 Speciale A may look like a routine event. Another year, another super-elegant, super-fast Ferrari: so what?

But this limited edition – restricted to just 499 cars – could be interpreted as a response to those upstarts at McLaren. In making the 458 Speciale A the most powerful spider in the marque’s history, Ferrari may be aiming a counter-punch at McLaren’s 650S Spider.

The new Ferrari has an aluminium retractable hard top, which takes a mere 14 seconds to deploy or retract. Sound familiar? Same as McLaren.

The 458 Speciale A sprints accelerates from 0-62 mph in three seconds – which is precisely what McLaren achieved when they raised the engine output of the MP4-12C Spider and renamed it the 650S.

Carbon fibre fills the cockpit of the new Ferrari 458 A, as it does in the McLaren. And newly designed seats are trimmed in Alcantara with contrasting stitching. Ditto.

Imitation may be the sincerest form of flattery but it’s not like Ferrari to be trailing along in the wake of another manufacturer.

Not getting unsettled, we trust?
